For a Pub that holds events and live entertainment at the core of its ethos, the last couple of years have been very hard!

2022, let’s get back on track! Watch this space, and follow us on our social media platforms, for updates on Live Music, DJ nights and other performance based events, including our monthly SpOAKen Word night

Expect to see lots of great nights under the Hill Top Sessions umbrella. Held on the first Thursday of the month, this regular night showcases established acoustic artists as well as providing a platform for upcoming local talent. And their Blues Nights are not to be missed.

   

February 3 – Danny George Wilson + Memorial (Hilltop Sessions)

It’s a real treat to welcome Danny George Wilson to our first Hilltop Session in 2022. Danny, bandleader of Danny and the Champions of the World, has just released Another Place, a stunning solo album. Danny will be supported by Brighton alt-folk duo Memorial. Feb 6 – SpOAKen Word Lewes, with guest Margaret Corvid

Monthly Spoken Word and Open Mic night hosted by Janine Booth. “We had a powerful mix of the angry, the poignant, the confessional, and the amazing, as well as the political.”   Write Out Loud reviews Sunday’s Spoaken Word Lewes, November 2021.

Feb 17 – Sepia Shadows

It’s always an absolute delight when Max & Beth come to play! Expect the unexpected. Sepia Shadows live in the Main Bar from 8pm

March 3 – Cate Ferris + Jack Bowden (Hilltop Sessions)

We’re delighted to have Brighton based multi-instrumentalist Cate Ferris come to March’s Hilltop Session. You’re in for a treat by this one woman symphony of lush textures, electronic beats and soulful harmonies. Cate will be supported by Kent songwriter and lyricist extraordinaire Jack Bowden.  Tickets:  March 3 – Cate Ferris + Jack Bowden

March 6 – SpOAKen Word Lewes, with guest Rick Dove

A veteran of spoken word stages across the UK, including the Crystal Palace International Festival, Wandsworth Arts Fringe. and the Edinburgh Fringe, Rick’s work has been described as “sonorous in every sense” and “akin to a secret being delicately unwoven”

April 7 – Michael Baker + Baby Eleanor (Hilltop Sessions)

We’re delighted that Brighton-based Michael Baker and his trio will join us for April’s session. Michael’s heartfelt and intimate songwriting and delivery will captivate all who spend an evening listening to him. Michael will be supported by Brighton jazz-infused singer songwriter BabyEleanor

April 21 – Lando Manning

Brighton-based Lando Manning is a lo-fi psych-folk artist who’s dreamy ballads are influenced by 70s British acid folk, 90s shoegaze and south american literature. Educated by classical music and informed by multiple genres, from country to psychedelia, Lando has carved out his own form of creamy lo-fi folky goodness. His debut EP ‘Hip Shot’ was released on March 23rd 2022. He will be performing a range of traditional songs as well as a few of his own compositions.

Marie White returns to Hilltop Sessions with her beautiful melancholic songs and wonderful sense of humour. Expect cracking songs with beautiful harmonies and keys by Emmie Spence. May 14 – Sweet Onion v The Muzztones

Two years (and a pandemic) later, we are delighted to welcome back Sweet Onions and The Muzztones for a Double A-Side of Live Music

May 19 – Wedding Band + Hypsoline + Kowloon Cowboy

Brighton-based lofi power-pop trio Wedding Band capture melancholic ballads mixed with a healthy dose of 90’s revivalism. Drawing from the likes of Heatmiser, Slowdive and Duster, Wedding Band seek to destroy from the inside out, as noisy turns delicate.

May 21 – Dubious Roots

June 2 – Sean Taylor + Josh Difford (Hilltop Sessions)

The Sean Taylor sound is a late-night cocktail of Tom Waits, with the voice of Van Morrison and a guitar style of John Martyn, while his live shows feature world class songwriting with stories from the road. Sean’s latest album, The Beat Goes On, earned him the four star treatment from The Daily Mirror and Mojo who simply described it as ‘Brilliant’.                                                                                                                          Sean will be supported by Josh Difford who is a superbly versatile songwriter and producer. September 1 – We Are All Fossils & Rosin (Hilltop Sessions)

Indie-folk outfit We Are All Fossils, led by songwriter Deist Oelofse, made a remarkable journey from YouTube project to leading advocates of the indie-folk musical genres. September 4 – SpOAKen Word Lewes, with guest Henry Normal

HENRY NORMAL | Writer / Poet / Film Producer 

Born in St Anne’s, Nottingham in 1956, Henry now lives in Brighton with his wife, the screenwriter Angela Pell, and their son, Johnny. He is a writer, poet and TV and Film producer and founder of the Manchester Poetry Festival (now the Literature festival) and co-founder of the Nottingham Poetry Festival. In June 2017 he was honoured with a special BAFTA for services to Television. He co-wrote and script edited every episode of the multi-award winning Mrs Merton show and the spin off series Mrs Merton and Malcolm. He also co-created and co-wrote the first series of The Royle Family.

October 6 – Martha Tilston & Natsuma (Hilltop Sessions)

With a voice like spider-webbed hollows and lyrics that inspire and captivate, Martha has carved her niche in the English modern folk scene with sharp, original songs that dissect the modern world and established herself as a renowned artist. With a BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ‘Best Newcomer’ nomination and seven albums to date, Martha’s own musical journey has taken her from the acoustic stage at Glastonbury to touring the far reaches of the globe.Supporting Martha is the amazing talent that is Natsuma, a 19 year old singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist and producer who’s been making music for over a decade. Natsuma writes, records and produces all her songs at home and takes inspiration from the likes of Nao, The 1975, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder and electronic music.                                                  TICKETS: October 6 – Martha Tilston & Natsuma | Hilltop Sessions

Dec 1 – Aliens & Indira May (Hilltop Sessions)

Aliens was formed in 2016 by writer Tim May and Del Amitri guitarist Iain Harvie. Their eclectic music and lyrics covered gives a voice to some of today’s most important topics. Drawing inspiration from a wide variety of musical legends, such as Billie Holiday, Jill Scott, Chet Baker, Howlin’ Wolf and many more, Indira May is a singer-songwriter whose captivating melange of jazz, soul and hip-hop has helped her attain the title of ‘one to watch’. TICKETS: Aliens & Indira May | Hilltop Sessions
